In what is now becoming a New Year tradition, gaming platform Steam have released their list of top sellers and most played games of 2017. Let’s take a look at some of the Steam Top Games of 2017….
The charts list all the usual suspects – Resident Evil 7, PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds, Cuphead – however several entries raised eyebrows for their inclusion in odd places. Here are the highlights and lowlights from this year’s lists.
Grand Theft Auto 5
As noted in previous Last Life Club articles, the juggernaut that is GTA5 continued to dominate the gaming scene last year – earning a place on the “Platinum” tier of the Top Sellers list as well as appearing in the Top Played Games of 2017 with “over 100,000 simultaneous players”. The game was initially released over 4 years ago (September 2013 if you can remember that far back) but has truly taken off in that time with GTA Online offering new and interesting content packs and events every few months.
While no-one should be especially surprised with this entry, given the media hype and astonishing figures being released about the sales and player counts, however this entry is still big news.
PUBG tops the concurrent players list on Steam (3 million at one point) and is one of only 2 games actually released in 2017 that are included in the “over 100,000” category (along with ARK: Survival Evolved). The other 7 games are a mix of gaming staples (DOTA2, CS:GO), popular team shooters (Payday 2, Rainbow Six Siege) and, of course, Grand Theft Auto 5.
There are also a bunch of games that stand out as unusual for their inclusion on the Top New Releases of 2017….
Top Selling in February – Youtubers Life
This game is a pretty strange offering in general, but ranking in the top February sales chart? Bizarre.
It also looks weird that the current banner is Xmas themed in a February list. Maybe that’s what appealed to everyone in February? Perhaps the holiday spirit had passed enough that this sounded appealing…..
Could this speak to a larger trend of Christmas-themed games topping the charts in early spring. Maybe next month’s GTA Online content pack will be Santa-themed?
Top Selling in July – Dream Daddy – a Dad Dating Simulator
Why is this not one of the biggest sellers overall!?! It’s a bit of an odd concept but apparently one of the summer’s most popular new releases!
I have also had several close friends send me a link to this game suggesting I buy it. I think people are trying to tell me something but I can’t quite put my finger on the message….
All of the Top New Releases missing from the Top Sellers list
The next notable inclusion is an exclusion – the lack of new releases in the Top Sellers of 2017 list! Only 4 out of the 12 “Platinum” band games in the Top Sellers of 2017 list were released during the year (ARK: Survival Evolved, PUBG, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Ghost Recon Wildlands).
Even when checking down the “Gold” and “Silver” categories, there are few 2017 releases that feature in these lists. Ass Cree Origins, COD:WW2 and Nier: Automata squeaked into the “Gold” category, while big names like Resi 7, Cuphead and Sniper Elite 4 only managed to achieve the “Silver”.
Which games surprised you in these lists?
