Our newest member Owain goes in to detail on his top 5 games of 2017, with a couple of curveballs.
5) Subsurface Circular
I’ve played (and completed) pretty much every game that has come from Mike Bithell and his team, and LOVED them. Subsurface Circular is no different.
Significantly shorter than Bithell’s other games, but packing just as much quality and passion, Subsurface Circular is up to par with the rest of their games. Not to mention, the brilliant story that is told in the game (all culminating in a surprisingly difficult decision) and the fairly challenging puzzles that you’ll come across in game.
If you’re looking for a short game that you can complete in one sitting, it’d be hard to find a game that’s better suited.
4) Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles
This game came as a bit of surprise to me. I hadn’t heard of it before and just decided on a whim to pick it up and, oh boy, was that a good decision. It’s hard to define Yonder’s genre, it’s got elements of exploration, farming and survival games which are all blended together perfectly. Alongside this, the game’s world is beautiful, and I found myself spending way too much time exploring and adventuring (another HUGE part of the game)
Coming out of nowhere, this game was perfect for me: A mix of my favourite genres, a relaxing environment and visually impressive – I was destined to love this game.
3) Sonic Mania
I’m not what you’d call a huge Sonic fan, but the Sonic games have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. This is why I’m so happy that Sonic Mania was good – it delivered on everything it set out to: Nostalgia? Check. Brilliant platforming? Check. Iconic and catchy music? Definitely check.
It was such a relief to finally have a Sonic game that I’m not ashamed to say I enjoyed and I honestly hope Sega takes a good, hard look at what made Mania such a great title (Although, looking at Sonic Forces, maybe there’s still room to learn..)
2) The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
There was no shadow of a doubt that Breath Of The Wild was going to be in my top five games this year (you can probably guess what my number one game is already..)
Breath Of The Wild is a perfect representation of everything the Nintendo Switch wanted to be: It’s new, different and breaks the mould – Everything the Switch set out to do – and Breath Of The Wild does all this perfectly.
If you haven’t played this game already, you definitely should, it’s 100% worth your time.
1) Super Mario Odyssey
Two Nintendo games in my top two? Nintendo is back and what a return!
Mario Odyssey delivers on all fronts, everything about it is so close to what made Mario great: Exceptional platforming mixed in with Mario 64-esque moon collecting. This isn’t even mentioning the beautiful worlds you explore, the charming story (I know? A story in a Mario game) that Odyssey tells, and perhaps the best thing: BOWSER’S WEDDING OUTFIT.
Mario Odyssey is by far one of the best platformers I’ve played in years, and is what ultimately made me buy a Switch – and I can’t say I’ve regretted it.
Destiny 2, Fornite, CaveBlazers
