Sega has confirmed the identity of the Sonic Forces new character: a player-customisable anthropomorphic hero to join Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic.
Following rife speculation over the identity of the Sonic Forces new character, we now know that the third playable option for the game is a Hero Character creation feature.
Players will be able to pick from seven different creatures – each one with its own unique ability:
- Bear — Blows away enemies with a homing attack
- Bird — Flies high with double jump abilities
- Cat — Keeps one ring after being hit
- Dog — Restarts with five rings after the player dies
- Hedgehog — Collects rings when getting damaged
- Rabbit — Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
- Wolf — Automatically draws in rings when near them
The game will include hundreds of customisation options from shoes to gloves to accessories that can be collected as players progress through the game (microtransactions haven’t been confirmed but are surely a given). Each custom character will be equipped with a grappling hook and can gain additional weapons by collecting Wispons – a variation on the Wisps.
Interestingly, the grappling hook has been a feature of the recent Sonic Boom titles, raising the possibility that this was originally planned as the third play option – until everyone realised how much of a disaster Sonic Boom had been for the franchise.
Sega has promised that the Custom Hero will be an active part of the game and included in the cutscenes as the story progresses, suggesting this is much more than a purely superficial option. If nothing else, Sega have clearly heard the complaints about Sonic‘s menagerie of unpopular companions – if you don’t like this one then it’s your own fault because you created it.
The teaser trailer confirms that Sonic Forces is still scheduled for release at the end of 2017, despite Sonic Mania having been delayed from its original Spring release.
