Project Sonic 2017 has been officially confirmed as Sonic Forces, whilst Sonic Mania has been delayed.
The SXSW Conference in America last night hosted an official Sonic The Hedgehog panel, meaning loads of new information for fans of Sega‘s mascot. The main announcement was Sonic Forces, the game previously unveiled as Project Sonic 2017.
From the team behind Sonic Generations and Sonic Colours and powered by Hedgehog Engine 2, the first official gameplay trailer is certainly reminiscent of the best two Sonic games from the last decade.
Making a return alongside the Wisps from Sonic Colours are characters including Amy Rose and Team Chaotix, although Sega has been quick to reassure concerned fans that they won’t be playable in the game.
Alongside the modern and classic stage modes as included in Sonic Generations, there will also be an as-yet-unconfirmed third gameplay style (presumably not Sonic Boom, which remains the worst selling Sonic game ever).
This all looks pretty good for a new Sonic title (even though the bar hasn’t been set particularly high there…), but there was some bad news – the eagerly anticipated Sonic Mania has been delayed from Spring to Summer 2017.
Although a definite release date for the title has never officially been confirmed, expectations for the game are high following recent videos showing it in action, so the delay is disappointing. However, another stage included in Sonic Mania was revealed at SXSW – the Flying Battery Zone, which originally debuted in 1994’s Sonic & Knuckles.
Sonic Forces remains scheduled for a late 2017 release, whilst Sonic Mania should arrive sometime before mid-September. Both titles have been confirmed for PS4, Xbox One and Switch as part of Sonic‘s
25th 26th anniversary celebrations.
