Yooka-Laylee has gone gold, so prepare: this is the closest thing you’re gonna get to a new Rare game and woo-ee does it look good.
Yooka-Laylee started its life as a Kickstarter project a mere two years ago. The spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie has been developed by a bunch of ex-Rare staffers and is undoubtedly heavily influenced by the studio’s old games…. I mean… Just look at it.
I mean, call me old, or whatever, but I for one am absolutely buzzing to see a return of the classic platforming genre I grew up loving. I really hope the finished product is as good as the trailers would have you believe.
Everything is set for release which is in itself excellent news but it is worth mentioning that with the retirement of the console at the end of last year, the Wii U version has been cancelled. PS4, Xbox One and PC releases are all set for the 11th April, though, and who knows; maybe we will get a Switch release later this year?
In a statement, Playtonic have said:
We couldn’t have reached this moment without the incredible support of our backers, fans, family and friends across the games industry
Thanks again for your unwavering enthusiasm for our studio. We hope you enjoy Yooka-Laylee.
Playtonic don’t seem to be planning on taking the route of one-hit-wonder, either. They have recently been joined by Viva Pinata’s Justine Cook… I’m trying not to get too excited.
